The special issue of the Eastern European History Review critically examines the distinctive method of ruler selection in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, known as free election. This practice was unparalleled in Europe. Undoubtedly, the interregnum represented not only the most unstable period in the state’s history, characterized by the absence of a king, but also a notably dynamic and engaging dimension of political activity among the nobility and European diplomatic engagement.
